The Qatar-America Institute (QAI) facilitates dialogue between national security professionals in the United States and Qatar in hopes of reinforcing efforts toward stability and peace in the Gulf Region. Qatar’s open society and geographic location makes it an indispensable ally to the United States, and grants it a unique perspective on national security issues and regional politics.
Qatar and the United States have a history of national security cooperation dating back to joint operations against Iraq during Operation Desert Storm. The United States began expanding its military presence in the country through the 1990s, and the multi-billion-dollar Al-Udeid Air Base became an indispensable asset for the U.S. military as the Global War on Terror began. Al-Udeid hosts over 10,000 U.S. troops, and more than 18,000 air strikes against regional extremists have originated from the base. The partnership between the United States and Qatar has been critical to the national security of both countries in the 21st century.
QAI seeks to proactively develop and strengthen this relationship by enabling further dialogue between the national security communities in both countries. Through greater understanding of perspectives and opportunities for mutual support, QAI aspires to force-multiply the effectiveness of both countries’ national security efforts and ensure that their alliance manifests its full potential.
